Great news! Ian has kindly taken the time to answer some questions for us to share on the site with you all. Once again, Ian has provided his fans with some really interesting answers. Enjoy, guys!
Q: Working on "Pretty Little Liars,” you’re exposed not only to the wonderfully talented cast, but to a number of writers/directors etc with incredibly interesting bodies of work. With access to such a veritable source of knowledge & past experiences, what are some of the best things you’ve learned and/experienced since joining the show?
I’ve learned patience. Everyone "behind the camera,” if you will, has been doing this for years, and whenever I begin to feel anxious about the future, both career-wise and emotionally, there is always some one there to remind that this is a marathon and not a sprint. I’ve also heard some crazy stories about other actors from hair and make-up to the camera guys. I love hearing tales of people who’ve been jerks on set, and I literally write those stories down as to not repeat them.
Portraying the English teacher Ezra Fitz in the TV series ‘Pretty Little Liars,’ the young and talented actor Ian Harding already has a cult-like following. He spent some time with DA MAN and reveals some interesting insights. Here, Harding gives us his best poses in this exclusive fashion feature.
Born in Heidelberg, Germany—where his American military parents were posted—Ian Harding joined the drama club at his high school after his family moved back to the U.S. specifically, the state of Virginia. He fell in love with acting at that time and his passion for it continues to this day. He has had a good number of roles both in feature films and on TV, but nothing as prominent as his role in Pretty Little Liars.
His feature credits include Greg Mottola’s Adventureland and Ed Zwick’s Love and Other Drugs—where he plays alongside Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway. Although he states that feature films and TV are two very different industries, Harding explains that “these challenges are what get me fired up.” Before becoming a regular on Pretty Little Liars (which just began Season 2 in June 2011), he had small roles on NCIS: Los Angeles and others.
Q: When the show first started, there were fears that your character would not turn out to be a regular – in part due to both the direction your character was taken in the book series, and the immediate connection fans felt with Ezra & his relationship with Aria. This was particularly so with Ezra’s absence in several episodes. Did you have similar concerns when you joined the project, or was Ezra always destined to be a regular from the beginning?
I had no idea how long Ezra would be part of the show. I know he disappears after the first four books so I was a little worried, but I suppose I was so happy to have a job that I didn’t care for how long the character would stick around!
